Cats stay Undefeated and beat UNC 73-72
I was at this game, and can I just say, that the atmosphere was the absolutely most incredible thing I’ve ever experienced. Honestly, I’ve been to games in Rupp, but this absolutely was the most insane thing I’v ever witnessed.
It was a rough game for the Cats, and UNC literally hit almost everything they threw up from the 3 point line. They shot over 50 percent from the 3, and that is the first time I can remember them shooting so well all year. The Cats on the other hand, shot poor from the 3 point line, and not only that, but we just looked really sloppy at times.
Miller, Jones and Kidd-Gilchrist all showed up to play, and had spectacular games. Though the thing that will stick out the most, even though he was relatively quiet the whole game, will be the image depicted above… simply, The Block.
That block was seriously so crazy… I can’t describe how rocking Rupp was after that, and after the Cats sealed the win, it was absolutely mind blowing.
We still have things to work on, and our shooting from the 3 needs to improve. Also, Teague still has a lot of improving to do… he is still young so don’t worry, but he has really been struggling.
On a lighter note, great job to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist who was the leading performer finishing with a double-double; 17 Points and 11 rebounds. Great job.
Just enjoy this amazing win and bask in the victory while the Cats, and our fans get ready to take on the Hoosiers this coming Saturday. I think it’s good for the cats to have a week off after such a tough game. They could really use the extra practice too.
Until Next time,
GO BIG BLUE!
Kentucky Basketball in a nutshell.
I love Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
It wasn’t pretty through the whole game, but we starting pulling away in the second half. The defense was pretty lackluster at times, and we really need to start boxing out better instead of just trying to out-jump the other team. But overall it was a good win for the Cats. We only had 4 turnovers and you could just tell that the ball security was better. Teague handled himself nicely, but needs to work on finishing! But it was good seeing Darius show up to play again, and Terrence Jones also looked very solid again.
Team Stats
Terrence Jones finished with 19 points, 4 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 2 Steals, and 2 Blocks. Pretty solid game all the way around for the big man.
Darius Miller also finished with 19 points and pitched in with 5 rebounds along with 4-5 shooting from the 3 point line.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 11 points, 7 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 2 Steals and 2 Blocks and had possibly the most Nasty Dunk we could see all year off of a steal… I love me some Gilly.
Anthony Davis had a Double-Double and scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, he also had 4 blocks. And probably 5 Dunks lol.
Marquis Teague looked much better this game and finished with 14 points 8 assists and 4 steals. He needs to finish at the rim though!
Doron Lamb and Kyle Wiltjer were really quiet in this one although Doron lamb pitched in 9 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
All in all a really good game. Although it was overshadowed by the Cats victory today over Tennessee in football! Shout out to Matt Roark who did a great job at QB today! And Shouts to Danny Trevathan and Winston Guy for all they have done for UK.
Just a note too, Kentucky’s next game is against St. Johns, and St. Johns lost to Northeastern today… we should have no problem with them.
And as always… GO CATS!
Welcome to the Big Blue Family, Alex Poythress! Today, Poythress chose to play college basketball for the University of Kentucky, picking UK over Memphis and Florida. He joins commits Willie Cauley and Archie Goodwin. See you in 2012!
I haven’t blogged about Monday’s exhibition game yet because I honestly had to take a couple of days to sink everything in. The above picture pretty much sums it up. Honestly, the game left me speechless. I’m gonna make a few notes about it, but there isn’t much to say.
First off, the final score was 125-40 and we honestly could’ve beaten this team by over 100 points…. For God’s sake we put in the walk ons with 6 MINUTES, I repeat 6 MINUETS to go
In the game. I was proud of everyone, everyone looked good. Eloy Vargas lead the team with 12 rebounds, he looked much better.
The cats weren’t just better than Morehouse, they worked hard, the whole game. I’ve never seen a team this talented work that hard. Teams like this don’t come around often. And victories don’t come around like this often.
Wiltjer lead all scorers with 26, Jones finished with 22, and Davis finished with 21.
That’s another thing, this team is so unselfish… They would rather pass the ball to make a big play then score themselves… Kidd-Gilchrist WORKS SO HARD, and he is SO FAST.
I can’t express enough how excited I am about this team, and how special they are. This may be the best team ever at UK. No exaggeration. I don’t see a major weakness. And yeah it was an exhibition game, and yeah it wasn’t a very good team. But the bottom line is, it doesn’t matter who we played Monday night… We would’ve beat them by double digits. Our starters shot 26 of 26 in the first half. That is absolutely absurd.
Brace yourselves everyone. College basketball is about to be taken over again by the Kentucky Wildcats.
GO BIG BLUE!
So Terrence Jones tweets that he and Stacey Poole are watching a movie in the Wildcat Lodge right now. And his dad also said he is still on the team. I WANT STACEY TO STAY! I mean he is just a sophomore. Please stay Stacey…

IT’S HERE! IT’S FINALLY HERE! Kentucky basketball finally has made it’s start with an opening exhibition game against Transylvania. I didn’t get to watch it until late but I recorded it and these are my thoughts.
First Half was really sloppy and you could tell the boys just haven’t clicked yet. But you know what, it’s early. It’s okay. Cal didn’t work the ball inside much in the first half, but I think he did it on purpose. Of course we can dominate a bunch of 6’3” guys inside, so why not work on other aspects of a game. If any of you are worried, stop it. Seriously.
Second half of course we started to get rolling, things started looking much more smooth and consistent. Shots from outside were falling, we worked the ball inside more, and of course started to really pull away.
Game Notes: The Good and the Not So Good
The not so good
1. Stacey Poole - He was not even in the building which was surprising considering he had just been tweeting about how the decision was his and he wanted to be at Kentucky… should be interesting to find out whether he stays or not. Whatever his decision, I wish him the best. Stacey seems like a good kid.
2. Darius Miller - He made some really good moves and hit some shots… but he did not come out aggressive at all, which is highly disappointing considering he is a Senior and needs to be our leader… Just looked like the Darius of old, probably will be first off the bench at this point.
3. Eloy Vargas - He came in and played maybe 20 minutes, and in the 15 minutes you’d expect him to actually put out a ton of effort and play aggressive. Still played soft and didn’t go at it nearly hard enough
4. Fans still telling Polson to shoot when he gets the ball - Seriously guys, you are beating a dead horse… and he IS our back up point guard he will be a big part of our team this year. Stop it, seriously.
5. Doron Lamb’s defense - Gilly yelled at him several times to help him trap in the back court, and Doron just simply wasn’t there. To be a high caliber defensive team we are supposed to be, we need Doron to step it up on D, especially if he is going to be a started.
6. First half shooting - I don’t think we need to shoot the ball so much in the first half… look to drive more and create shots. If we start out that cold out of the gates against a team like UNC, we will be hurting.
7. Our press - It wasn’t too “bad”, but you could definitely tell it needs work and is in its early stages. If Transy can break our press that easy, then something is wrong with it.
The Good
Terrence Jones - He looked fairly good, not as good as I’d have hoped, but I don’t think he tried his hardest. His defense looked good though and he still finished with a double double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds
Anthony Davis - WOW… this kid is a super talent. I mean we all knew that, but some of the blocked shots he had… oh my goodness. I would still like to see him more aggressive inside and grab more rebounds, but still a very solid game opener, I was pleased. I was exceptionally pleased though with his 8 blocks… though he didn’t try and score too much that could actually be a good thing, though his shooting was poor shooting only 2-7 from the field. Davis finished with 6 Points, 8 Rebounds and 8 blocks. Think we could see a triple-double from him this year? Lets hope so.
Doron Lamb - Still lighting it up, Doron was 50% from the 3 point line shooting 3-6. He needs to work on is defense, but no one can leave this kid open. He is seriously one of the best 3 point shooters I have ever seen. When he gets hot… watch out. The sharp shooter ended up with 19 points.
Marquis Teague - I thought Teague was the some what of a shock for the night. He really came through with some good shots and some even better assists. He’s a smart player, which we will need, and I think he really understands what this team needs. He shot a little too much from outside, though he did hit a 3. But other than that, his defense is solid, his passing is amazing, and his ability to get to the rim is even better. Teague finished the game with 14 points and 9 rebounds.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist - I told everyone from the beginning that Gilly was going to be the best freshman out of this class, and that he would start. Coach Cal just stated after the game that Kidd-Gilchrist must start. This kid is an absolute phenomenal talent. I’m talking about an absolute BEAST! He is the leader of this team. He is so emotional and passionate for the game of basketball. The way he worked his feat on defense EVERY time, how athletic he was getting to the rim and finishing, and the fact that he was the most vocal player on the floor absolutely proves he is our leader. He works so hard, you have to love it. He is by far my favorite player on this team, and I can’t wait to see him go up against some of the big talents. I can even begin to express how much I like this kid as a player. To be that talented, and still work that hard is flat out awesome. His decision making was great, he didn’t force shots, he let everything come to him. He may end up being one of the best basketball players we have ever had at Kentucky. Gilly finished with 19 points, 7 Rebounds and 5 assists. An absolutely well rounded game.
Closing Comments
We saw a lot of promise out of this game, and also a lot of things Kentucky needs to work on. But this is a team that will absolutely get better over time, and by March, they will be ready to win number 8. We will still get a few losses here and there, but I don’t think we lose at home, and I think those loses will be close. The only times I see us losing is on the road against really physical opponents, he like to pound it inside a lot. But for everyone who is freaking out because it was close early on, stop, please. This was the first game of the season and a practice at that. Cal will absolutely have these guys game ready by 11/11/11.
Until the next exhibition game… GO BIG BLUE!

Willie Cauley a 4-Star Recruit from Olathe, Kansas just committed to Kentucky this morning. Cauley, who is the number 6 Center in America, is a top 40 recruit and is the second recruit for Kentucky for the 2012 class.
Cauley is a big athletic boy. He’s almost 7 foot (about 6’11”) and can finish strong around the rim. I’m not sure he will be an instant starter for Kentucky, but will put in good minutes off the bench. He’s really athletic and plays nice Defense down low, but outside of that the kid doesn’t seem to have much offense. He will be a 2-3 year player, but with his athleticism Coach Cal should have no trouble making him a special player.
With Coleman committing elsewhere, this is a huge grab for the Cats and adds some much needed depth to the big man spot. It will be interesting to see who all stays from this years team to compliment Archie, Harrow, and Cauley. Now if we could just get Shabazz… Then next years team would be absurd. *Fingers Crossed*
Below is a good highlight video that compliments Cauley’s game well:
